Learning to Live Flavorfully at McCormick & Co.
As a full-time lover of food, it was good fortune when I landed my first full-time job at McCormick & Co, flavor capital of the world.
In between daily recipe tastings, I held a variety of jobs at McCormick, moving around the marketing department every couple years to learn, absorb, and shake it up a bit.
Every position I held was a new role for the company as my managers and I learned what skills I could bring to the table.
As many marketing professionals do, I started with my left brain by analyzing sales data, plugging away in excel sheets all day. I also conducted recipe audits across the various McCormick brands to ensure consistency and on-brand visuals.
As I grew with the company, I began to see my strategic thinking as a strength. I had a way of diving openly into vague situations that were experiencing friction, helping to identify the root cause of issues, and then creating a new process for things to run more smoothly.
I also managed external agencies to conduct a multi-brand content audit, identifying content strengths and gaps, with the goal to engage with customers through more relevant and meaningful content.
As I saw the content opportunities, I moved towards my right brain, supporting social media, digital evergreen content, and campaign efforts.
I then established a new process to create in-house food photography and content, which evolved into managing and shooting monthly food photoshoots in collaboration with McCormick Kitchens.
I am grateful for my managers who helped me see my introvertedness as a strength, who encouraged me to explore different areas of the business, and saw something in me before I believed it myself. Those years created a launchpad for my career and in turn, they created a loyal spice girl for life over here.
